THE SCIENCE OF CLEAR SKIN
3 Minute Read (worth it)
The best way to get clear skin is to understand the science of how blemishes form, so that you can be best equipped and laser focussed in your efforts. We also believe that knowing the actual causes can help you to overcome any feeling of guilt, because the science confirms that it's not your fault you don't have clear skin.
There are 4 steps in the formation of blemishes and these occur like dominoes - 1 leads to the next, which leads to the next and so on.
STEP 1: "ANDROGEN INDUCED SEBUM PRODUCTION"
The presence of androgen hormones cause sebum production to go in to overdrive. Sebum is an oily, waxy substance and is useful for maintaining skin health, it only becomes an issue when overproduced.
STEP 2: "KERATINISATION", WHICH ESSENTIALLY MEANS "BLOCKED PORES"
The process of keratinisation causes a combination of sebum and dead skin cells to block the pathway between the sebaceous gland (where sebum production is now in overdrive) and the surface of the skin. This prevents the sebum escaping to the surface and so it begins to build-up. It's important to know that this is happening deeper than the surface of the skin, which is why no matter how much you wash, cleanse and scrub your face blemishes often continue to form.
STEP 3: "PROLIFERATION OF BACTERIA"
The skins microbiome is teeming with life and different types of bacteria and ordinarily it is inconsequential. However, certain types of bacteria begin to thrive and multiply within the build-up of trapped sebum. This combination of sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria is ultimately what forms white pus.
STEP 4: "INFLAMMATION".
Sensing the proliferation of the bacteria, your body exhibits an inflammatory response to tackle it in self defence. This is what causes the sore, raised red bumps. Ironically, it's really just your body trying to help!
WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN FOR YOU?
In short, it means you shouldn't place too much of a reliance on topical products, because they don't tackle the root cause - this is why we always recommend you use our skincare supplement which tackles the root cause.
We love topical products and they can do a brilliant job at helping to reduce SYMPTOMS on the surface of the skin, but our philosophy has and always will be that the best approach is to target the ROOT CAUSE.
Do you find it a little odd that brands don't talk about this science - the cynical side of us believes this is intentional. You're more profitable to brands if you merely manage the symptoms of your skin concerns but never actually treat it, simply because it means you're forced to spend longer buying their products. But we didn't start this business to make large profits - we started it so that everybody could live a life with clear skin.
